This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday July 11th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

The BAIRD'S SPARROW first reported on June 18th is still at the Glacial Ridge project in Polk County. Directions to the site are to go 3.5 miles west on U.S. Highway 2 from its junction with State Highway 32, then turn south onto the gravel pit road. Go past the office and follow the left road southeast a total distance of one mile from Highway 2. The sparrow sings on the west side of the road between the road and the large concrete slab.

On July 5th, three LARK SPARROWS were in Sibley County west of Belle Plaine. They were found along County Road 6 between 291st Avenue and 295th Avenue near the Sibley Aggregates Pits. At the Louisville Swamp in Scott County Bob Dunlap found three Lark Sparrows at the main entrance on July 11th. They were seen near the the second set of railroad tracks.

At the Claremont Sewage Ponds in Dodge County were four WILLETS, one LEAST SANDPIPER, and two SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS. Tom Tustison found them on July 10th. Near New Germany in Carver County, Steve Weston counted 17 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER on the 9th along state highway 7 just east of town. Many of these species were also reported from Sibley and Steele counties during the past week. And in Meeker County, Dan Floren reports the following shorebirds from various localities during the week: SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, WILLET, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and PECTORAL SANDPIPER. He also found a CLARK'S GREBE on Long Lake south of Grove City on July 4th.

Two WESTERN KINGBIRDS were on the Anoka-Sherburne county line on the 8th. They were seen along Jarvis Street north of U.S. highway 10.

Three CATTLE EGRETS were found near section 17 of Island Lake Township, Lyon County, on the 8th.

Denny Martin counted more than 400 EARED GREBE nests on Swan Lake in southwestern Sibley County on the 5th.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen near the junction of 285th and Isanti County Road 7 on July 8th. Another was seen near the junction of Pine County Roads 17 and 13 on the same day.
