This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday June 27th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On June 18th, John Richardson discovered a BAIRD'S SPARROW at the Glacial Ridge project in Polk County. Though it could not be found in the following days, it was eventually relocated and has been seen as recently as June 27th. Directions to the site are to go 3.5 miles west on U.S. Highway 2 from its junction with State Highway 32, then turn south onto the gravel pit road. Go past the office and follow the middle road southeast a total distance of one mile from Highway 2. The sparrow sings on the west side of the road between the road and the large concrete slab.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found on the 24th near the town of Whipholt in Cass County. On the south shore of Leech Lake there is a rock wall with a historical marker and the bird was repeatedly seen on the wall.

At the MacGregor Marsh in Aitkin County, YELLOW RAILS and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were heard on the 21st.

Drew Smith found an adult ROSS'S GOOSE on June 20th at Lake Byllesby in Dakota County. It was associating with about 50 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS at the western end of the lake. Also present were two CASPIAN TERNS, eleven WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, one SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, and one SEMIPALMATED PLOVER.

A NORTHERN HAWK OWL was found by Chris Benson in Cook County on the 22nd. It was seen near Seagull Lake actively hunting on Three Mile Island. In the Sax-Zim Bog area of St. Louis County, a GREAT GRAY OWL can be seen along Owl Avenue about a quarter of a mile south of County Road 52.

Don Wansura reported a late NASHVILLE WARBLER on the 25th in New Brighton, Ramsey County. It was heard near the junction of Silver Lake Road and County Road E. The KENTUCKY WARBLER reported in mid-May at Williams Nature Center in Blue Earth County was still present on the 24th. On the 21st, a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was in the the St. Croix River backwaters south of Franconia in southern Chisago County.

Somewhat unusual were the ten MARBLED GODWITS seen June 24th on Stearns County Road 32 just west of state highway 4.

Finally, a pair of MUTE SWANS is still present at the Sleepy Eye sewage lagoons in Brown County. On June 22nd they were on the eastern-most lagoon.
