This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, July 23, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Although it has been two weeks since the last update of this tape, there has, unfortunately, been very little birding activity of note in Duluth and northeastern Minnesota.

Dave Benson's tape of July 9 reported on WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS showing up at many locations in northeastern Minnesota; on a SPRUCE GROUSE seen on Lake County Road 2, 2.75 miles south of Minnesota Highway 1; on the continued presence of one or more THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS 3.5 miles up the Spruce Road off Highway 1 in Lake County; and on GREAT GRAY OWLS found on the so-called Owl Avenue north of Meadowlands in the Sax-Zim Bog in St. Louis County and also on Pietz's Road in Aitkin County off County Road 18. It is possible all of these birds may still be present although no one has reported on them since early July.

The 40th Avenue West Erie Pier area mudflats in Duluth have been worth checking for shorebirds during July and should continue to be productive for several more weeks. Last week several species of shorebirds were seen there including BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. For those unfamiliar with this location, take the 40th Ave. West exit off Interstate 35, cross over to the bay side of the freeway, park at the gate just beyond the frontage road, and it's a five minute hike down the gravel road to the water impoundment. It is OK to drive in if the gate is open, but there is always a chance the gate could be closed behind you while you are birding at the impoundment.

Finally, it is not too early to start thinking about our annual Hawk Weekend activities on September 18, 19 and 20, which, as always, are scheduled for the second weekend after Labor Day every year. If lodging is needed that weekend, it is recommended that reservations be made soon since every motel in Duluth is normally filled that weekend.

The next update of this tape will either be on Thursday, July 30, or on Thursday, August 6 if there is no birding news next week.

As always, if you have birds to report you may leave a message after the tone.

Send your rare and unusual Minnesota sightings to our electronic hotline: MnRBA@linux.winona.msus.edu. To learn more, send a message (the message being these two words: info end) to mnrba-request@linux.winona.msus.edu.

Sightings can be called in directly to the tape, (218) 525-5952, by leaving a message after the tone at the end of the tape.
