This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

A RED-THROATED LOON in alternate plumage was found on the 23rd by Peder
Svingen at the Lafayette Square 31st Street access on Park Point. Peder
also found two WHIMBREL on the ball fields at the Park Point recreation
area on the same day. Karl Bardon found at least one and possibly two
WESTERN GREBES at Lafayette Square on the 23rd, along with a RED-NECKED
GREBE. Mike Hendrickson found a BONAPARTE'S GULL on the 18th at
Lafayette Square, and he had a record-high fall count of 116 NASHVILLE
WARBLERS at the recreation area. Kim Eckert found 16 warbler species on
Park Point on the 21st.

An adult FRANKLIN'S GULL was found by Lars Benson on the 18th at 27th
Avenue West in Duluth, along with nine shorebird species including
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and STILT SANDPIPER. To reach this location, take
the 27th Avenue West exit off I-35, head toward the river and then east
on the dirt road past the WLSSD facilities. Park at the small turnout on
the right side before the road goes under the freeway bridge.

Dave Grosshuesch banded a CONNECTICUT WARBLER at Hawk Ridge on the 22nd,
and had flocks of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS and RED CROSSBILLS fly
overhead. Two UPLAND SANDPIPERS flew past the Hawk Ridge main overlook
on the 23rd.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD and a GREAT EGRET were found in Itasca County on the
23rd at the White Oak Lake boat landing, one mile south of Deer River.
