This is the Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday January 31st, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

On January 29th Jim Lind found three female-plumaged HARLEQUIN DUCKS at Agate Bay in Two Harbors, Lake County. Check especially close to shore near the DNR boat launch.

January 27th, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was reported by Chris Benson on Winona County Road 39, a half a mile south of state highway 74. Jim Mattsson found a Townsend's Solitaire on the 27th in Lebanon Hills Park in southern Dakota County. Directions are to park at the northeast corner of the park at the intersection of Cliff Road and Dodd Road. Walk west around the orange snow mobile barricade and go about 150 feet to the trail. Turn left and walk about 200 yards until you come to a "Y" in the trail. Keep left and walk another 200 yards or so. The bird was in the white spruce trees that border the trail adjacent to the new homes. And Dan Floren found a Solitaire on the 31st on the north side of the Litchfield Nature Center in Meeker County.

In Duluth, an adult GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was found by Peder Svingen on the 26th. It was first seen at the Superior Entry and later, in the Port Terminal area. At Black Dog Lake in Dakoty County there was still an adult THAYER'S GULL and an immature GLAUCOUS GULL on the 25th.

St. Louis County road 16 has produced sightings of two THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS, 2.1 and 2.2 miles east of the junction with county road 110, and also a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER near the junction of 110 and 16. A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen two and a half miles west of 110.

A LONG-EARED OWL was seen by Don Wanshura at Wood Lake in Hennepin County on the 26th. A SNOWY OWL was seen on January 28th by Gary Simonson in Mahnomen County on highway 113 about a quarter of a mile west of the town of Wabun.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL reported from Duluth on Jean Duluth Road, 3.6 miles north of Martin Road, near the St. Louis County Highway Department was still present as of yesterday.

An immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK is apparently hanging around state highway 13 near its junction with Cedar Avenue. in Hennepin and Dakota counties. Look especially in the southeastern corner of this intersection.
