This is the Minnesota birding report for Thursday November 30th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Steve and Jo Blanich and Warren Nelson report from Aitkin County that they located five GREAT GRAY OWLS on November 26th. One was 11-8/10 miles north of the town of Aitkin on county road 1. Another was 13 miles north of Aitkin on county road 1. One was one mile west of Pietz's Road on county road 18. And two were along Pietz's Road, the first was 2/10 mile north of county road 18 and the second was 2-8/10 miles north of county road 18. In Lake County a Great Gray was seen along Lake County road 2 one half mile south of the Sand River. Two Great Grays were seen along the Stoney River Forest Road at 3 and 16 miles south of state highway 1. And in Cook County a Great Gray was reported from the Arrowhead Trail at the Portage Brook overlook.

On November 24th three NORTHERN HAWK OWLS were in northern Lake County. One was on Highway 2 across from the Greenwood Lake boat landing and two were along the Stoney River Forest Road, 11.5 and 12 miles north of forest road 11. A Northern Hawk Owl is still being seen at Eagle Ridge Resort in Lutsen, Cook County. And in Todd County John Krull found a SNOWY OWL six miles northeast of Long Prairie along Todd County road 25. In Chisago County, John Gislason reported a SNOWY OWL on the 24th east of U.S. highway 61 along county road 3.

A possible PRAIRIE FALCON was reported on the 23rd from south Minneapolis. It was seen atop the grain elevators along Dight Avenue between 35th and 38th Streets south.

Karen Schik reported a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE at Hidden Falls Park in Minneapolis. It was seen November 23rd along the hiking trail just south of the highway 5 bridge. In Two Harbors, Lake County, a Townsend's Solitaire was found on the 25th by Jim and Sharon Lind along 4th Avenue between 2nd and 3rd Street. Another Townsend's Solitaire was seen by Chris Benson in Grand Marais, Cook County, on the 25th.

An immature GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was reported on the 24th from Black Dog Lake in Dakota County. It was seen about 100 yards from shore on the east side of the lake. There was also a first-winter THAYER'S GULL and an adult BONAPARTE'S GULL in the area. Two adult GLAUCOUS GULLS and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were still on Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis on the the 30th.

On Lake Pepin south of Lake City in Wabasha County both WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and LONG-TAILED DUCK were found on the 25th. They were seen from a pull-off along the highway near mile marker 61.

An EASTERN TOWHEE is still coming to the home of Ron Refsnider in Coon Rapids, Anoka County as it has since the 19th.

And a HOARY REDPOLL was seen on the 25th along Lake County road 2 about a quarter of a mile south of the Sand River. Other birds found in the area included WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, RED CROSSBILL, and PINE GROSBEAK.
