This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 8, 2004, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

I have a second-hand report that a TUFTED TITMOUSE has been seen at the corner of Apple and Oak Streets near the Maxwell Rd in Duluth.

Warren Nelson saw a SHORT-EARED OWL on Aitkin Cty Rd 1 north of Aitkin and about a half-mile north of the diversion channel. It was seen again as recently as the 5th. He also reported that SHARP-TAILED GROUSE are dancing at two leks north of Gun Lake on Township Rd 380 about 2.0 miles west of Cty Rd 5.

AMERICAN WOODCOCK and WILSON'S SNIPE were displaying in Cook Cty on the 1st.

Denny Meyer reported banding over 1200 COMMON REDPOLLS and 7 HOARY REDPOLLS between March 18 and April 5 in Northern Itasca Cty. Bill Maier reported 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS on the 7th. The West Skyline Hawkwatch had two adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS this week, one on the 2nd and one on the 6th. In addition, Frank Nicoletti reported 652 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 2nd and SANDHILL CRANES on the 5th, 6th, and 7th.

Other newly reported migrants this week include GREAT BLUE HERON, BELTED KINGFISHER, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, FOX SPARROW, and SONG SPARROW.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, April 15.
