This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 30th, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Peder Svingen identified an ARCTIC TERN at 40th Ave West on the 27th. Jonas Benson spotted five RED-THROATED LOONS on Lake Superior off Park Point Recreation Area on the 29th.

Carol and Jim Tveekrem sound a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER a half mile west of the Split Rock River on Hwy 61 in Lake County on the 25th. Also on the 25th, Peg Robertson reported five HUDSONIAN GODWITS from the Beaver Bay sewage ponds.

This has been the best spring shorebird migration in Duluth in a number of years. The past few days there have been large mixed flocks (50 - 200 birds) of SANDERLINGS, RUDDY TURNSTONES, and DUNLINS on the beach at Park Point. RED KNOTS, WHIMBRELS, MARBLED GODWITS, WILLETS, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and LEAST SANDPIPERS have all been reported this week. 29 species of shorebirds have been reported this spring from within the city limits of Duluth.

Several individuals reported INDIGO BUNTINGS this week. Jim Barrett saw a PHILADELPHIA VIREO in Morgan Park. Bruce Monson reported the first BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO of the spring at 40th Ave West on the 27th. Julie O'Connor had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in Solway Township.

The American Birding Association Convention will be held in Duluth, beginning on June 10th. The field trip leaders need your help in finding some of the sought-after breeding species of our area. The places need to be along a good road, and we need exact locations. Please leave reports of singing owls and any of the less common breeding species. Thank you.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, June 6th.

The phone number for the Duluth Birding Report is (218) 728-5030, and callers can report bird sightings if they wish after the tone at the end of each tape.
