This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, January 24, 2002, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

With several groups touring the area this week, many new birds turned up:

Mike Overton reported a MEW GULL on the 18th at the Superior, Wisconsin landfill. It has not been seen since. On the 22nd Kim Eckert found a first-winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL at the landfill. Among the thousand or so Herring Gulls, there are also GLAUCOUS GULLS, a few THAYER'S GULLS, and one adult ICELAND GULL.

A THREE-TOED WOODPECKER was found on the 21st in central St. Louis County on Co Rd 16, 2.1 mi east of the jct. with Co Rd 110.

BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen on Co Road 211 a half-mile north of 133 in the Sax-Zim bog. Several Black-backeds were seen on Co Road 16, in the first two miles east of the jct. with 110.

Several GREAT GRAY OWLS were also seen this week on Co Rd 16 within three miles east, north and west of the jct. with 110. Great Grays were also seen in the Sax-Zim area on Cr 133, 1.7 miles west of the jct. with Hwy 53, and on Nichols Lake Road at two locations: 1.1 miles east of 7 and 2 miles west of 53.

SNOWY OWLS were seen this week at mile marker 11 on Highway 53 north of Duluth, behind the restaurant at the Bong Airport in Superior, near the Duluth Airport on Airport Approach Road near the prison entrance, and in the harbor.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL on Jean Duluth Road, 3.6 miles north of Martin Rd, near the St. Louis County Highway Department is still present. Hawk Owls were also seen this week on Lake Co Road 2, 14.5 miles south of Hwy 1, and on the Gunflint Trail in Cook County, 32 miles from Grand Marais and at the jct. with County Road 50.

A HOARY REDPOLL has been coming to a feeder near Duluth. For more information, call Mike Hendrickson at 626-2268.

BOREAL CHICKADEES were seen at several locations, including both east and south of the jct of Co Roads 52 and 202/203 in the Sax-Zim area, and at the jct of Co Roads 16 and 110 in central St. Louis County.

Jim Lind reported a flock of HORNED GREBES on the 20th, near the mouth of the Stewart River, two miles up the shore from Two Harbors. Today, Peder Svingen reported three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS at Canal Park. A LONG-TAILED DUCK has been seen this week at Canal Park and at the Superior Entry.

A PEREGRINE FALCON has been seen several times this week in neighborhoods in East Duluth and in the harbor.

Reports of White-winged Crossbills and Bohemian Waxwings have been scarce. If you see these birds, please leave a message at the end of this recording.
