This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, March 16, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

With the return to more normal March weather lately, the birding in N E Minnesota has not been as eventful as it was in previous weeks, and unfortunately this will be a relatively short report. About the only new migrants reported in Duluth this week were AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, HOODED MERGANSER, an unusually early TURKEY VULTURE on March 10, and AMERICAN WOODCOCK. Also seen since last week were increased numbers of CANADA GEESE, MALLARDS and RING-BILLED GULLS in the harbor, as well as some additional NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS heard at various locations.

It has also been reported that BOREAL OWLS continue to be heard calling on territory in Lake and Cook Co's, but no specific locations have been given.

About the only winter birds which continue to be present in and around Duluth recently include BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and COMMON REDPOLLS.

Frank Nicoletti's hawk count is still going strong along W Skyline Pkwy near Enger Tower, and as of yesterday, the 15th, he had counted the following:

TURKEY VULTURE 1 (again, very early on March 10) BALD EAGLE 1,130 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK 5 COOPER'S HAWK 1 NORTHERN GOSHAWK 10 RED-TAILED HAWK 25 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK 59 GOLDEN EAGLE 41 (already a record high spring season total) MERLIN 1

Finally, I'd like to thank Dave Benson who so capably took over the responsibility of doing this Birding Report while I was out of town during the past 3 weeks -- as well as during other weeks in recent months when I was gone.

Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, the Duluth Birding Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on March 23. The phone number is (218) 525-5952, and callers can leave a message if they wish after the tone at the end of the tape. Also note that a message can be left without having to wait for the birding report to end: after the tape starts playing, push 5 on a touch-tone phone, the tape will then stop, the tone will sound and you can leave your message.

The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union (MOU), the state bird club, as a service to its members.
