This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 10, 2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

Weather has been warm and pleasant this week in the northwest. A few thunderstorms have occurred of course, but no really heavy rain to spoil the fun. Summer flowers are blooming including now the Showy Lady Slipper, the state flower, and where the habitat supports them, the Pitcher Plants. Soon we will have Wood Lilies in all the ditches.

Pat DeWenter was at Lake Bemidji State Park on July 5 where she reported 11 species of warbler still singing. Other species seen included HERMIT THRUSH and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.

From Rydell NWR, Elizabeth Almlie reported a NORTHERN CARDINAL that appeared at the refuge on July 6. Other species included RED-NECKED GREBE, GREEN HERON, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD. Nathaniel Emery found a DICKCISSEL at Glacial Ridge NWR on July 5. The bird was seen along the road at the south end of section 6 of Tilden Township. On June 27, a NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was found in section 20, 100 yards north from the second pulloff west of MN 32 on the north side of MN 32. He also reported nesting BLACK TERNS on the refuge.

Thanks to Elizabeth Almlie, Nathaniel Emery, and Pat DeWenter for their reports.
