What wonderful Christmas weather we have been having in the northwest! While some parts of the area have some unwanted snowy , slippery conditions, the far northwest part of the area just had beautiful light snowfall to whiten things up, and a simply gorgeous full moon. Birds were active at feeders, while most humans were active at the groaning tables. Now is the time to get outdoors and work off all that wonderful food.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported a GRAY JAY still coming to the cabin feeders, and a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH. More than 30 PINE GROSBEAKS are now present there.

Doug Johnson reported on the Bemidji CBC in Beltrami County held on December 23. A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was found there by John and Ann Mathisen. Other species seen included two PIED-BILLED GREBES, an adult SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, AMERICAN COOT, NORTHERN CARDINAL, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and 291 COMMON REDPOLLS.

Patrick Beauzay reported that the BOREAL CHICKADEE seen earlier at his cabin near Park Rapids in Hubbard County was seen again on Christmas Day. For directions email Patrick Beauzay [patrick.beauzay@ndsu.edu].

The YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER seen here at our feeder in Pennington County near Thief River Falls was last seen on December 23.

In Red Lake County, Steve Dahl reported a GREAT HORNED OWL hooting in the woods near his home east of Plummer.

The Fargo-Moorhead CBC was held on December 15 when 46 species were seen, 37 of them in Minnesota. Among them was a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in the 900 block of S Elm St in Moorhead, Clay County.

Amy Drake in Otter Tail County reported a TRUMPETER SWAN on CR 1 on December 23. Other species seen included MOURNING DOVE, NORTHERN CARDINAL, PINE GROSBEAKS, PINE SISKINS, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES. Tom Smith has DARK-EYED JUNCOS, and several RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS at his feeders. An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen southwest of Fergus Falls.

Thanks to Amy Drake, Bob O'Connor, Doug Johnson, Larry Wilebski, Patrick Beauzay, Steve Dahl, and Tom Smith for their reports.
