Happy Thanksgiving! Today is the first really cold, calm day we have had this fall so far. The sun is shining so that makes it a really pleasant day. There are reports this week of Snowy Owls coming south. Watch for them now as several have been sighted in various places throughout the plains region within the last two weeks. Only a slight dusting of snow is on the ground so it is still pretty dark at night. Perhaps next week we will get some more of the white stuff. Most water around the northern part of the area is skinned over this morning with fresh ice so few waterfowl are left.

Alma Ronningen in Otter Tail County reported a NORTHERN CARDINAL on November 18, 35 TRUMPETER SWANS on November 19, and on the 20th, 10 WILD TURKEYS, NORTHERN SHRIKE, BROWN CREEPER, and a late HARRIS'S SPARROW.

Pat Beauzay reported a BOREAL CHICKADEE at Long Lake near Park Rapids in Hubbard County on November 22. There were PINE GROSBEAKS at the Fish Hook River in Park Rapids.

From Polk County, Donna and Leon Thoreson reported that four EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were seen in Climax on November 19. A SNOWY OWL was spotted on a telephone pole west of Climax on MN 220. Other species seen this week in the county included BALD EAGLE, two GREAT HORNED OWLS, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, a pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS in Climax, SNOW BUNTINGS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and PINE SISKINS. There is also a report of a sighting of an EASTERN BLUEBIRD by an unidentified observer northeast of East Grand Forks on November 17.

COMMON REDPOLLS were reported in Marshall County by Linda Johnson on November 18. On November 22, she had PINE GROSBEAKS in her yard there. On a quick trip to Agassiz NWR this morning, I saw several BALD EAGLES, 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and a single SNOW BUNTING.

Doug Johnson found WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at the east end of Lake Winnibegoshish in Cass County on November 18.

In Beltrami County on November 22, Doug observed that the BLACK SCOTER that was reported earlier is still present on Lake Bemidji off Diamond Park Point. Also in Bemidji, there are BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS. Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported a group of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at his cabin northwest of Lancaster on November 18. Other species seen that day included PILEATED WOODPECKER, GRAY JAY, and COMMON REDPOLLS. On November 22, he added WILD TURKEY and PINE GROSBEAKS to that list.

Thanks to Larry Wilebski, Linda Johnson, Alma Ronningen, Patrick Beauzay, Doug Johnson, and Donna and Leon Thoreson for their reports.
