BIRDING REPORT:

As expected, sightings have poured in over the past week - so many that only the highlights will be available in this report.

The CAROLINA WREN at Eddy Edwards home in Battle Lake, Otter Tail Co. has set up residence. A nice dome-shaped nest of grass and moss contains five eggs. Although the eggs are probably infertile, it's still an interesting observation.

A total of 16 species of WARBLERS have been reported this week. Species NOT yet reported include Northern Parula, Magnolia, Cape May, Blackburnian, Bay-breasted, Connecticut, Mourning and Canada.

Two SNOWY EGRETS were observed on May 9th by Eddy and Judy Edwards on the Rush Lake WPA in Otter Tail Co., however they could not be re-located on the 11th.

Carrol Henderson relayed a report of a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD at the Thief Lake WMA through Beth Siverhus on the 4th. It was seen along Co. Rd. 49 about 3/10 miles north of it's junction with Co. Rd. 6.

Highlights from the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge on the 6th and 7th, reported by Jeanie Joppru, Shelley Steva and Maggie Anderson include: EARED GREBE, GREEN HERONS, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, VIRGINIA RAIL, PEREGRINE FALCON, FORSTER'S TERN, LONG-EARED OWLS, SHORT-EARED OWLS, SEDGE WRENS, MARSH WRENS and several warbler species. Other birds reported by Gary Tischer from the refuge include WHIP-POOR-WILL and possible GYRFALCON. Agassiz pool is in draw-down, so is a magnet for shorebirds and 13 species have been reported there.

From Old Mill State Park, Mary Broten reports BROWN THRASHER, HARRIS'S SPARROW, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.

Bill and Mary Wyatt had the first SCARLET TANAGER sighting on the 9th at their home near Detroit Lakes.

Some birds seen at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge this week include: WILD TURKEY, SANDHILL CRANE, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, WARBLING VIREOS, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, EVENING GROSBEAK and 14 warbler species.

At the Hamden Slough NWR, Homstead Lake, right next to the headquarters, is in drawdown and 10 species of shorebirds were seen there this week.

Jeanie Joppru reported a pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS in her yard in Thief River Falls on the 10th.

Other birds reported include: GREEN HERONS at Lake Alice in Fergus Falls, SORA, CHIMNEY SWIFT, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, INDIGO BUNTING, BOBOLINK, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, HARRIS'S SPARROW, and LARK SPARROWS.
