Minnesota County Checklists

Here are links to bird checklists for each of Minnesota's 87 counties. The checklists show all the species seen in each county, their seasonal abundance, and whether or not the species has been recorded nesting there. These checklists, compiled by Bob Janssen, were derived from M.O.U. files, personal observations, and other sources.

• The period of record is approximately the last 25 years except for the listing of rare species (all rare species are included for each county regardless of time period).
• The lists contain all of the birds recorded and documented (including Casuals and Accidentals) in the county.
• The records used in these lists are gleaned from those published in The Loon (seasonal reports, notes of interest, and articles), county biological survey data, breeding bird survey data, and lists submitted by individuals to the editor of The Loon.
• For the purposes of these checklists, the seasons are defined as follows:
  • Spring: March, April, May
  • Summer: June, July
  • Fall: August, September, October, November
  • Winter: December, January, February
    
• For the purposes of these checklists, abundance terms are defined as follows:
  • Common (C): Occurring as either widespread in distribution or locally in high numbers
  • Uncommon (U): Occurs in small numbers. May be local in distribution or confined to specific habitats
  • Occasional (O): Occurs sporadically often as individuals; local in distribution and usually confined to specific habitats
  • Rare (#): Has only occurred in the county 5 or less records/season
• Confirmed nesting in the county is indicated in the N column.
• These terms and criteria are not meant to be exact, but are designed to give an indication of the average abundance of species within an ecological zone. There is usually variation in abundance within an ecological zone.
