This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September
4, 2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

We have had a quick entry into fall weather with last weekend's cold
front. Substantial rain fell, the wind blew, and temperatures dropped.
Now we are lucky to get into the 60's if the sun shines. Migration
appears to be picking up as a result, and birding should be interesting
for the next few weeks.

Kim Eckert's Minnesota Birding Weekend in northwestern Minnesota found
171 species, a real testament to having lots of eyes on the sky, trees,
and land in a 40 mph wind! Included in Lake of the Woods County were 28
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and a dozen AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS along CR 2,
1.5 miles S of CR 8. Also seen were WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS north of
Norris Camp and Faunce.

The MBW group reported RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Warroad wastewater
treatment ponds, three SHORT-EARED OWLS along 440th Ave. two miles north
of MN 11, PHILADELPHIA VIREO at the Roseau City Park, and a LE CONTE'S
SPARROW at Warroad , all in Roseau County.

>From Beltrami County, Dave Carman reported a PEREGRINE FALCON flying
along the Lake Bemidji shoreline on August 31. Kelly Larson found a LE
CONTE'S SPARROW in downtown Bemidji on September 2nd.

Here in Pennington County, the Minnesota Birding Weekend group found
HORNED GREBES at the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds on
September 2. On the 3rd, I saw a PEREGRINE FALCON upsetting a group of
crows over the Digi-key parking lot. He seemed to be playing with them,
and they sure took a strong exception to that. Later that day, I
observed a group of about 15-20 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS hawking insects over
the Red Lake River on the east side of Thief River Falls.

Shelley Steva saw a BELTED KINGFISHER in Oklee, Red Lake County, and a
GRAY PARTRIDGE four miles east of Plummer on August 28.

In Marshall County, the MBW group found 22 species of shorebirds at
Agassiz NWR on the weekend. Highlights included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
WILLET, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, MARBLED GODWIT, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER,
DUNLIN, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, WILSON'S PHALAROPES, RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and also an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. The
weekly survey tallied over 2000 shorebirds in all.

Thanks to Dave Carman, Kelly Larson, Kim Eckert, and Shelley Steva for
their reports.
